Creating Our Dream Cottage By The Sea
Posted by Omar Simons on October 26, 2011 in Interior Decorating with No Comments
We had always wanted a house by sea and only a few weeks after we started looking in earnest we viewed the house we
eventually decided to buy. The main selling point of the house is its fantastic view of the
beach which you can see from all the rooms at the front of the house. Not
surprisingly we loved it at first sight and were lucky enough to have our offer
accepted. Very
quickly after we got the keys we added wooden shutters to the windows, gave all
the rooms a fresh lick of paint, changed the kitchen worktops to polished
granite ones and updated our bedroom. At that stage the alterations were fairly
low-key and mainly cosmetic . Later, we took
the opportunity to give the cottage a makeover to reflect our passion for the
sea and coastline. We
enjoy decorating and like to get our hands dirty so we were itching to get
started . We decided to move out to
give ourselves a blank canvas while we carried out the work on our home but
were fortunate that we were able to get a neighbouring property on a short term
let We made the living room bigger
by removing a stud wall in the hall, and clad the dining room walls in wood. To carry out some of the work
we had to disconnect and remove our wood stove, albeit temporarily, so we used this as an appropriate opportunity to create an eye-catching
slate feature on the wall behind. The cottage had old wood flooring which looked
a little worse for wear so we had this removed and replaced with beautiful
limed oak flooring. Because we were able to tackle things head on without worrying
about working around furniture – or even the kids – we were able to get things
done pretty quickly and were back in our own home in just a matter of week. Getting everything done just the way we wanted was a
great relief and was fantastic for all the family. Now the cottage is cosy and filled with personal touches such as candleholders, lampbases, signs and
artwork. We are real suckers for scented candles and have
loads of them all over the cottage by
our favourite brands like Yankee candle and True Grace candles. We have even
tried the latest in home fragrances, the reed diffuser. The last couple of
years have been traumatic at times, but hard graft and keeping our sense of
humour has pulled us through. Now after an exhilarating day spent on the beach
watching the children surfing, we come back to a home we love and in which we
all feel really happy.
